Mulanda nursery school, 2022

Sikiliza Leo is a Ugandan NGO in Mulanda and Lwala, Tororo District, founded in 2001 when HIV and AIDS hit the region hard. Its goal: to strengthen and support the local population in tackling problems of health and poverty.

The work is done by people from the villages themselves. The Sikiliza Leo Werkgroep vzw, a volunteer group in Belgium, supports them with funds and advice.

Sikiliza Leo is Swahili for listen today. The name says what the organisation believes in: solutions for tomorrow grow out of listening, learning and working together today.

Sikiliza Leo is one programme with several points of focus. Clean water keeps children healthy. Healthy children go to school. Around every vulnerable child stands a family. And those who build an income of their own will, in time, need less support.

Two organisations, one programme

Sikiliza Leo NGO · Mulanda

Decides and acts. Its own board and project leader Charles Opio direct a team of twenty people from the villages. The NGO decides autonomously about its work and also raises support in Uganda through its own network: school fees from parents, local sponsors, income of its own.

Funds, advises and inspires. Volunteers raise most of the funds, confer with Mulanda every month and regularly go on field visits. The choices are made over there; the working group thinks along.

Where does Sikiliza Leo work?

Mulanda lies in south-eastern Uganda, close to the Kenyan border and not far from Lake Victoria. The nearest town is Tororo.

Mulanda is a village of scattered hamlets and settlements. Sikiliza Leo works mainly in two parishes, Pochowa and Lwala, and with the medical centre in Mulanda.

Achievements

Water

Clean water

Between 2006 and 2008 nine wells were installed. Local Water User Committees have kept them running ever since. The iron-rich water corrodes the pipes, which is why they are being replaced with PVC step by step.

Schools

Two nursery schools

In 2006 Sikiliza Leo built nursery schools in Mulanda and Lwala. Today 500 children attend them. Every day they get a meal, and the teachers follow further training, with support from the municipality of Hove.

Families

Care for vulnerable children

Child monitors each follow about ten orphans and vulnerable children, at home and at school, and support the grandparent, aunt or uncle who carries the care.

Local economy

Local economy

In 2014 Sikiliza Leo built a chicken house for the Mary women's group, which has run it ever since. The NGO also invests, with Ugandan sponsors, in vegetable gardens and fruit trees.
